CBD tends to be a very misunderstood topic for many people. At this point, most people have at least heard of CBD. It’s hard not to with signs and advertising in various places. But just because they have heard of it does not mean they really understand or have ever had real CBD education.
The truth is that there are many people who have heard of CBD but they don’t really understand what it is. They don’t know what types of benefits it can have or where we get CBD from. There is also a lot of misinformation out there that directly links CBD to marijuana or THC. These things and these perceptions of CBD are hurting the CBD industry.
It is for reasons such as these that we need to do a better job educating people about CBD. If we start small on a local level it could be the building block for widescale CBD education and appreciation for what it is and what it is not.
Without Education CBD Can Be Viewed Negatively
The CBD industry is facing an uphill battle in many ways. While it is true that CBD has helped many people with various ailments there is still a lot of misinformation and fake news about CBD.
This type of misinformation certainly leads to lower consumer confidence in CBD products. But false information and misunderstanding isn’t the only reason why consumers may have a negative opinion of CBD. Some of it is due to the missteps of the CBD industry itself. On top of that, there is a complete lack of federal regulation and oversight of the CBD industry.
What Do the Numbers Say
There have been studies and surveys done to try to determine where people stand on CBD and how much they really understand about it. One such survey was conducted by Invisibly. The results of the survey that they conducted paint a picture of how the public views and understands CBD.
Invisibly took a sample size of 1,087 Americans to start with. Out of all the respondents they found that 62% of them indicated that they had never tried a CBD product of any kind. That’s a pretty large percentage but maybe the more important question we should try to understand is why they have never tried CBD.
Out of the people who have used CBD 11 percent reportedly used it in topical form, 14 percent used CBD as an edible, and another 13 percent used both edibles and topicals.
When it comes to the people who have tried CBD 64 percent of them said that they did understand the difference between CBD and THC products such as marijuana. So that means that over one-third of respondents said that they tried CBD without even knowing if it was different than THC.
One of the more telling findings may be that 68 percent of the people who have not tried CBD said that they do NOT know the difference between CBD and THC products like marijuana. That means that 68 percent of those people are grouping CBD in with a federally illegal and psychoactive drug such as marijuana. It just goes to show how misunderstood CBD really is.
Even with all of the misinformation out there the survey found that 47 percent of those who have never used CBD would consider using CBD in the future. Twenty-four percent indicated they would be open to trying it to reduce the anxiety they are feeling. That was the largest reason that people were willing to give it a try.
Why the Negative Impressions of CBD
We believe that a lot of the negativity surrounding CBD comes from a lack of education regarding what CBD is and how it may help. The fact that 53% of users who have not tried CBD say they would never try CBD is interesting. Are they making that decision based on the reality of CBD or are they basing that decision on incorrect information?
As the survey shows there are a lot of people out there who do not distinguish CBD from marijuana. In their minds, they are either the same thing or they are so closely related that they just lump CBD in with marijuana. Either way, the perception is incorrect and it is damaging to the CBD industry.
There are likely a lot of people who would be more open to considering trying CBD if they understood it is not at all the same as marijuana. Marijuana is known for its psychoactive component and CBD is not. The fact that marijuana is federally illegal and causes an altered mental state is a big drawback for some possible CBD users. Until they receive correct information about CBD it will be hard to change their minds about trying CBD in the future.
Lack of Federal Regulations
A lack of regulation of the CBD market has probably hurt more than it has helped. The problem is that there are no set standards that a company selling CBD has to live up to. Without that oversight, we have seen rogue companies pop up that are selling inferior products.
These inferior products either don’t work, don’t contain the ingredients they claim to contain or they may even contain harmful ingredients. These types of things end up becoming major problems. They give the entire CBD industry a black eye because they end up making the news.
As Americans, we are accustomed to things like food and drugs being monitored by and regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, or the FDA. It seems like just about everything available to us by way of food or drugs goes through the FDA for approval. This gives us some level of comfort when we go to use these products that have been vetted and are hopefully safe to use.
Unfortunately, we do not have that luxury when it comes to CBD. CBD has not been fully reviewed and approved by the FDA. Without FDA approval it throws up a large caution flag to many users. There are many people who will not consider using CBD because the FDA has not given its stamp of approval. The situation is made even worse when people do not fully understand what CBD is in the first place.
CBD Can Be Beneficial
Another reason why CBD education is important to the people that we care about is that CBD can help people. It sounds simple but it’s the truth. CBD has helped multitudes of people from around the globe with various ailments.
The benefits of CBD are many and people take CBD for different reasons. According to the survey, 24 percent of those who have not used CBD would consider it to help reduce anxiety. Nine percent would consider it to reduce pain and 14% indicated they would try it for both stress and pain reduction.
People have been using CBD to help manage their pain for years and with great success in many cases. It has gained so much notoriety in helping to reduce pain and inflammation that the NFL has invested millions into further research into using CBD to help with pain management.
CBD is frequently being used by athletes because of the many health benefits they are experiencing from it. We’ve mentioned things like reducing stress and anxiety. That helps you whether you are an athlete or not. But the same goes for reducing pain and inflammation. A relaxed body and mind make for a good foundation for a healthier lifestyle.
Could Help Reduce Rx Drug Abuse
Something that we don’t hear a lot about is how prevalent prescription drug abuse is in our society. Most of the time these addictions start out as harmlessly taking prescription drugs for a specific ailment. But all too often people can end up with an unhealthy dependence on these drugs.
Many of these drugs, especially opioid pain killers, are very addicting. These types of drugs would include codeine, hydrocodone, morphine, and oxycodone. These drugs are very powerful and very effective but they can also be very dangerous. Sometimes, if people are not careful, these drugs can end up doing more harm than good in the long run. If you or someone you know has been affected by drug addiction then you know the feeling.
These opioid drugs can really help you manage your pain and increase your quality of life. They have been increasingly popular because we are experiencing an aging population where people are experiencing more aches and pains.
Using opioids for short periods of time under doctor supervision is normally not an issue. The problem can be when someone needs them daily for long periods of time. It can lead to drug abuse, drug dependence, and even drug addiction.
On top of that there is a real possibility of opioid overdose which can be life-threatening. They can also have very negative reactions when taken with other medications. You need to be very careful with that as well.
These drugs can be very useful and helpful. But they can be extremely dangerous and detrimental to one’s health as well.
CBD Could Be a Natural Alternative
As we have mentioned previously, CBD can be a very effective agent to help in pain management and reduce inflammation. CBD is also a natural substance, is generally considered very safe to use, and does not pose a dangerous addiction and overdose threat like opioids do.
It works naturally with the endocannabinoid system in the body to help to reduce the effects of inflammation and pain in a natural way. CBD is often ingested through the use of CBD oil but it can also be taken in other forms. CBD gummies have become very popular. But for targeted pain relief you may consider a CBD topical that you apply directly to your skin. Many people report that a combination of CBD topicals and CBD oil can be very effective in reducing pain.
Final Thoughts From The CBD Guru
Making sure people understand and are adequately educated about CBD is important for many reasons. One reason is that CBD has been and continues to be very misunderstood in many ways. Until people receive correct information about CBD they will continue to be reluctant to even try it.
CBD really does have the potential to make an impact on the lives of many people. Just like it has already done and continues to do for those who have experienced the benefits of CBD.
As the acceptance of marijuana as a recreational drug continues to grow it seems logical that the acceptance of CBD should continue to grow. Marijuana contains THC which is a psychoactive, mind-altering component. CBD can only contain up to 0.3% THC, not enough to alter your mind. If marijuana can become legal and accepted there is absolutely no reason that CBD should not be especially given its many health benefits.
By not further allowing CBD use while simultaneously allowing more marijuana use actually goes against logic. It really makes no sense at all. If people can learn the facts about what CBD is and what it is not then hopefully they will see that and be willing to give CBD more consideration. Hopefully, they see it as something that can be helpful to them, their families, and their community.
