On the new van Halen album called right now and it’s got a line in it it says reach out and grab the moment right here right now Merry Christmas Dallas from Van Halen yeah what’s up Texas [Applause] Oh Yes There’s a sound Yes we finally [ __ ] made it [Applause] The looks are [ __ ] [Applause] pay to dig it man I don’t know you people way in the back and [ __ ] I hope you can hear our aid [ __ ] this is great man this is real [ __ ] you don’t know me [Applause] Someone put on the guitar here now and that the only reason why I put this guitar on it’s number one it’s an old Hagar – number two it’s [ __ ] I make Eddie play better when I put the guitar on I give him some competition kick him in the ass a little

Bit that’s right well let’s get on with it you know what I’m talking about [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [ __ ] you people matter don’t hurt these people up here up front man you [ __ ] up here but we don’t want you to relax that nothing but [ __ ] man take it easy on these people on fret they’re getting [ __ ] up they’re getting [ __ ] up so house man goddamn

Look at our there well I don’t know what this is but are there people that like work in these buildings right now can you imagine some secretary up there typing up some letter about some [ __ ] ain’t gonna work come on get out of their buildings and rock and roll with us now

Well I just want to say that this is probably the happiest moment of our lives here and when it comes yeah when it comes to like playing music because there’s nothing better than a free concert number one or number two nothing better than making good a promise man

Okay hey we’re gonna start over after after today man we’re gonna break even in Dallas and we’ll be back you know anyway hope y’all having fun that’s my having fun let’s get also run around Disappear [Applause] so how far back as this [ __ ] go away bacteria I mean how about way the hell back there you people back there let me hear you way back sit [Applause] can’t hear a [ __ ] thing [Applause] this is way cool oh I’d say now let me ask you people to question somebody over

Here told me about something who the [ __ ] is cotton eyed Joe what is that [ __ ] what the [ __ ] is cotton eyed Joe man huh is that some dancer some [ __ ] has anything like to Cabo Wabo or some old [ __ ] up dance what is it [ __ ] my

Dad was born in Texas I never heard no cotton-eye Joe your honor [Applause] I know why can’t this without me we don’t have a cent list we’re going by we’re just kind of playing songs that feel like and maybe if it’s tough it’s maybe so we’re gonna do well we’re gonna

Do uh yeah we’re gonna do uh hey this is too [ __ ] early for me to be singing but you know what it’s alright man I’ll blow my voice out now I don’t give a [ __ ] after today this is the [ __ ] [Applause] it’s too early to be drinking too but

I’m doing that also so [ __ ] let’s get on it [Applause] You say Eddie come on up say Edward you got to come up because I can’t get down I’m [ __ ] well you guys play whatever you want I’m kind of stuck up here what do you want to play out oh yeah go ahead let’s get back to 1984 [Applause] Once I sound music Now you people yoga Redbirds heaven red bird came up here and I gotta make one true confession to you last night we’re over Shreveport Louisiana it’s all I could think about was being here today and that was wrong that was wrong because Danny right now is what I’m supposed to be thinking

About being here today I had [ __ ] a word about tomorrow tomorrow may not come you know what I mean tomorrow there’s no [ __ ] guarantee about tomorrow yesterday is history and history sucks as far as I’m concerned cuz all we got ladies and gentlemen is right here and now [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] Cuz we gotta write right [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] you know I don’t know how long they’re gonna let us play today but we’re just gonna play I guess until we have to stop but uh [ __ ] I don’t know what your people having a good time is it all right out there well the way I figure is

If anybody doesn’t like to show or something just ask for your money back at the ticket booth you know what I mean Charmless I just Let it go Baby Just to talk Texas The savage buyers Oh [Applause] Mass insanity Come on baby [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] well they’re getting about ready to chest and we’re gonna try and squeeze in about three more songs for you alright [Applause] we’re gonna do some driver You [Applause] Oh [Applause] Close your eyes Oh We forget where we come [ __ ] Okay diggin we’re gonna do one more song and they’re going to shut us down and before we stop though I want to say a couple things here people first of all I want to thank Redbeard for keeping the spirit alive about the free concert all right second of all Louie Messina from pace

Concerts that man tried every year to get this free concert a half before us and he made it happen and that’s [ __ ] great the next thing is well thank you people from waiting for us as long we love you we’re coming back to tell us some time and I don’t know February or

Something but we’re coming back here and for all you people you know from you Center in [ __ ] San Antone Beaumont I don’t know where you came from but it’s a state of Texas and God bless you people you’re [ __ ] wonderful we love you drive home safe when you go home be

Careful don’t hurt yourself all right [Applause] you gotta see this the song No That’s Dallas Texas for your information I’ll explain it Thank you well see you in February we love you people math god bless you drive home careful okay love you man great that’s the most fun I’ve had in a long time it was real it was honest [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] we got here last night about 4 o’clock a morning and we’re Bert I’m trying to quit now we have it we use it don’t play this time of the day so it’s like this will probably be the first of two or three concerts we just thing about

Waking up in this hour no no that were the case we wouldn’t play for free with the money now really it’s a strictly because I lost my voice it in Texas jam for 77,000 pay paid people and I couldn’t sing it I felt so bad after on

The stage it feels so stupid there are no promises yeah that and I made a stupid state stop to show no less you know it wasn’t like this mumbling open magic and said you know we’ll come back into a free constantly been trying to do it ever

Since and when you promise people that must live in Texas you gotta kick it be a man of your word otherwise you’re history so we’re doing it because we want to make good for a bad shel wasn’t a bad show we just couldn’t say I’m going to

Play some music for however long it does plague this hour so you can go out there and have fun for a while huh live and learn on yeah we make it a big joke out of it I think I’m more excited about doing this being right on the

Whole tour you know if you could play free all I mean it’s cost us a bowl probably over a hundred thousand dollars to do this otherwise we’d do it every night I’d rather play free than charge money first wouldn’t like to say to him [Laughter] whoa Sammy Hagar’s new semester you sing

Yeah I wasn’t doing free concerts back then that’s it maybe you want to do it back and I don’t think I’ll lose my voice I mean this early in the day no one can sing great I don’t think so I just won’t sing great I just say I don’t

Know what I’m gonna judge then I can dance better now I’ve taken for me well if when we play here live and charge 30 bucks or whatever and there’s 77,000 people have you do a free concert it should be about 700,000 people and the city wouldn’t know it but so they

Wouldn’t be we almost got the plughole by not doing it okay by announcing it the night before they didn’t want us to announce it until just now we want it just to come out start doing yeah an hour before but that’s unfair to the people that drove from Beaumont and it’s

From you know Austin and all the places in Texas for the Texas jam they have to have time to get here too because they bought tickets right you know they’re you well I know a non-call there’s a plenty of people out there believe me every place to support yeah our music

Kiss I think is uh something that comes from our hearts and a lot of people relate to it so wherever we are on a particular day is the most important place on the planet yeah but my father was from Texas I’m about Texas blood of

Me so yeah Texas was real cool I think well hope it’s gonna be fun do you people out there it’s really just another show but is what makes it special so because it’s free it kind of takes the pressure off us we don’t have to do anything like

Complain want your money back you know it’s kind of there’s this a freedom involved a nun pressure situation we play bobble Bobble canteen our club in Mexico for his same thing played a couple nights done that people didn’t even know who it was is one and we had

About 5,000 people in the place only hold 500 so it was kind of telling Cabo 5,000 down there it looks like what it looks you know they’re all that fit in our towns but the point is that was a lot of fun playing with no pressure a

Lot of all we’re gonna do some songs we’re not gonna do some songs we normally do because we played two and a half three hours and and we can’t play that long because the city won’t let us so we’re gonna just gotta do just straight ahead we’re gonna just play

Through the set until they make a stop okay [Applause] [Laughter] okay I don’t know we’ll see if they make a stop to it ran out of sauce something’s got to happen one more question tonight Oklahoma and I’ll play there lady oh you gotta ask us when we’re there yeah I was just gonna

Say I was on the same so we had him back in eighty and I met Ed there I’d already met him but ed came in we had a little [ __ ] since I was sick as a hog there till I got back my guide strep throat and I was flying

Around doing chosen got infection in my ears and sinuses and I was wiped great know our fans don’t want to hurt us man if they don’t they just they’re cool we’ve got the best fans in a world that still tries no [ __ ] you know we don’t need bodyguards and stuff you know

As they just want to come up and give you five yeah they don’t want to kick your ass twenty to sixty thousand people packed into the West End of Dallas to listen to a free rock concert by the group van Halen as Texas News fives Marty Griffin

Reports fans wanted more but the band had to quit before the crowd got out of control it’s loud it’s rowdy it’s out-of-control rock and roll thousands of people packed into Dallas’s West End marketplace for a free van Halen concert and the band convinced a large crowd wouldn’t bring

Trouble with it our fans don’t want to hurt us man they don’t they just they’re cool this 1988 Texas Jam show at the Cotton Bowl actually brought the ban to Texas today four years ago lead singer Sammy Hagar couldn’t say so he promised to play for free the next time the band was

Here Glossip band members have family in Texas but my father was from Texas I’m I’ve got Texas blood in me so yeah Texas is real cool I thank them Texas may be cool but for a while police worried this crowd to get ugly an ambulance barely got through to get to

An injured woman some folks had too much to drink and too much to save police however there were only three injuries and three arrests for minor offenses we had a few disturbances but you know everything went pretty well for the most part police were pleased with the crowd

And how it acted in the flowers please will show it were coming out here it almost killed previous you can’t complain free to the public maybe but the show cost the band close to $100,000 to put on one band member said that’s an expensive price keeping a promise party

Group in Texas news 5 many rock concerts across the country have been marred by violence and injuries some of them fatal police credit today’s lack of trouble – some luck and – a crowd control plan at Texas News fives Craig marks shows us how that worked by concert time tens of

Thousands of Van Halen fans have crammed into the West End for the free concert this is really most concert goers like Alicia Roman are caught in the crowd side by side packed like sardines the people are going to end up getting trampled I mean it’s getting wild people

Not packed in on the pavement climb anything in sight for a better view meantime a couple hundred Dallas police officers and private security patrol inside and outside a barricaded perimeter law strategy was to set up a perimeter of officers and try to do everything to ensure the public safety

And to keep arrest to a minimum the perimeter allows police to control the crowd and alcohol consumption a minimum of arrest frees up police for major emergencies that’s why police made only three arrests despite some fist fights and other disorderly conduct all the problems that we’ve had down here has been pretty

Minor we’ve had a few people to get intoxicated but nothing really big the biggest concern for authorities is how to get inside the crowd in an emergency but here they successfully rescue a remember the broken rib after being trampled by the crowd the only thing I would change is I wouldn’t

Have a concert of this size letting out in downtown Dallas during rush hour city officials say next time they’ll ask for a location other than the West End so next time they won’t have to say what played any part in a success of a free big-name concert Gregg Marx Texas news 5

City officials say next time they’ll also insist on knowing the name of the band long before the concert starts the special events permit granted for today’s concert did not name the band in Dallas is West End today and all for a free rock concert concert co-sponsor Dallas Ally estimates

As many as 50,000 people showed up for Van Halen although Dallas police estimate it was closer to twenty to forty thousand people the one group came to fulfill an obligation that dates back to the 1988 Texas jam when lead singer Sammy Hagar suffered a sore throat he promised van

Halen would return with a free concert we’ve been trying to do it ever since and when you promise people that much less in Texas you got to be a man of your word otherwise you’re history this is the biggest concert ever held in the West End but police report a fairly incident free

Event with no arrests and only seven people requiring medical attention all of them for dehydration

  1. Amazing how many bootlegs there is of VH. Really surprised Mr money bags Roth didnt release ALL of his live concerts on DVD. Would've outsold anything and everything. There is some professional filmings with Sammy but i dont know about Roth. Nice to see a real film and not someones phone upload.

  3. Van Halen's solo sucked by this stage in his drunken, drug-fueled career. I saw them in 80 and 81 and they were ten times better. Eddie here is just making noises and doing gimmicks …a drill–really?? Sammy is the much better player here…..Eddie and his STUPID horse whinny gets OLD

  26. My takeaway was to see Eddie Obviously Clean and in good shape during this period in his life and not missing a note, leads are perfect. It just goes to show that if you take away all the booze and drugs from a talented human, he can shine like no other. His band has always been on point and so nice to see Eddie totally on point with them and having the time of his life….Duly missed my first ever guitar hero! EVH!!!

  35. And to think people actually call musicians today rock stars , NO THESE ARE ROCK STARS, they never sampled others music that is the most ridiculous concept ever people used to get sued for stealing other musicians licks, these are the bygone days of real ROCK STARS

  38. Man the hair band days.these dudes were really not one of the glam bands to me .they were just so powerful and blazed their own trails and were the #1Musically gifted of any group
What a happy magical time.when Sammy and the Van Halen crew got together that first time,I know they all could almost taste it in the air,and feel the electricity that was created like type of nuclear fission when you put the right combinations of elements and put them in the right conditions and right pressures and you create energy that can be felt, seen, touched, witnessed out of seemingly nothing.like from magic .but it wasnt magic it only appears to be and it wasnt from nothing.it was from that nuclear type reaction .and these guys are living elements .what a feeling they must have had in those first realizations that the energy from nothing ,the fission process was real and happening. If the band or a nuclear scientist could have had the technology to capture it in a bottle, the world could still be running on the power generated

And if you ever question the best guitarist in the world just listen to the way Eddie plays the Panama song and It gets to the slow down mid song "and I reached back between my legs " the muffled way Eddie plays that section with a different way .a bluesy style that you can just feel that not even the greatest blues player in the world alive or dead could outdo.with very few getting close enough to consider comparison with.i really think the world lost a great man of influence and ability as or greater than a mozart.davinci.ammadeas ,Elvis,…and I really think that he had only showed his importance to the world now but that it was going to continue and build and was all leading to even more unknown😂 history making contributions .such a loss to man kind.this entire band is so talented .and i kove the Sammy era. And I love the Dave era.its one of the hardest questions you could ever answer in all of music history .and that's a testament to the ability and genius of ed.
I saw them live 3 times and I was always blown away when Eddie would get to the halfway point and the band would take a rest and go below the stage and every spotlight in the arena would zero in on Eddie busting out with a huge long epic solo and before it was over girls would take off their panties and throw them at Eddie .and before long the pants would be flying so thick hanging from his long sweaty hair, his back, his head, and many would collect on the strings that he left long after the wrapped tuning knobs on that dropped down kramer neck.it was always at the most difficult to play mesmerizing solos sections, and he never lost focus or paused or stopped or missed a sound. The y had someone who's job was to sweep the panties from the stage after he finished to keep band from slipping.
