As Pennsylvania lawmakers renew their push for marijuana legalization, a new poll finds nearly 7 in 10 voters in the state support the reform—including a majority of Republicans. Most voters also want to see the legislature enact the policy change this year, rather than delaying it, the survey shows.
The poll from Change Research, which was commissioned by the advocacy group ResponsiblePA, showed support for legalization at 68 percent among registered voters.
The specific wording of the question asked simply: “Do you support or oppose allowing the sale of adult-use cannabis in Pennsylvania?”
Democrats were the most likely to favor the policy change (85 percent), followed by independents (62) percent( and Republicans (53 percent). Backing from Republican voters under the age of 50 was higher, at 63 percent, which ResponsiblePA said reflects “a clear generational change in conservative views on cannabis.”
“Supporting legalization not only carries little political risk, it provides electoral advantages across party lines,” it said.
After being informed about different models of implementation for the reform, support grew to 74 percent. Among GOP voters specifically, it increased from 53 percent to 62 percent.
