relevant it’s -7 outside it is cold outside and it’s not normally we’re normally in the 30s here so there are some things that just don’t work yeah and I assume that we’re not the only ones dealing with this growing in the winter it presents a bunch of unique hurdles to jump over you know I woke up at 6:00 this morning and I was worried about my grow the air conditioner wasn’t working correctly because it’s negative seven we’ll we’ll get into that but let’s let’s jump into some tips for keeping your grow in Prime condition during the cold winter month yes you know I was alluding to that because the first tip I’ll give you is to monitor monitor the temperature in your grow so you know if something’s going wrong okay before we get into how to monitor why why and I know you harp on this but why is temperature so important uh that’s the metabolism of the plant right there and plants are made of water so water expands one of those weird things think of this the only thing that expands as it gets colder right uhhuh but you’ve got water in those cells and as it expands is going to burst those cell walls is going to kill your plant so having it you know slow as as it gets colder it will slow down but if your heat goes off if you have a complete failure over there man you’re looking at catastrophic crop failure okay and I know that a lot of Growers actually prefer to grow in the winter they turn their lights off during the summer turn them back on indoors at least during the winter yep definitely I mean for the most part you can get rid of heat it’s easy enough to get rid of heat through vents and exhaust to a point okay so let’s start off with talking about some ways to monitor your growth yeah I mean that’s the first thing is you need to be able to monitor it you don’t want to be running minine is in a a back garage here for me to run to this back garage to check and see what’s going on is a pain okay at 6 this morning I woke up and I couldn’t sleep and I was like I hope my grow isn’t freezing and so I grabbed my phone and I grabbed my little it’s called a goov monitor right here this is 20 bucks 25 bucks on Amazon I think these are like 15 bucks which is uh has a little bit of a a remote right here so it gives you remote temperature but these Go I mean it works on your phone so man just it I’m not partial to the brand but get yourself something that’s 20 25 bucks you can get multiple sensors for 30 or 40 bucks always know what’s going on in your grow a lot of these shout out pulse has a grow a pulse meter that you can set so it’ll actually give you an alarm if something’s wrong so something like this just Monitor and we should clarify you say back garage but you’ve got this place kind of pimped out yes you do your recording in here so it needs to be warm you’ve got a heater back here yes and this is my lung room right here uhhuh now granted it cost me a lot of money to heat up this entire lung room for what are we here for four 5 hours a day uh for the extra 19 or 20 hours a day I have to heat this place just so I can keep my grow heated yep and so if you’re growing in an area where maybe it’s not room temperature all day right what are some extra things that you can do to keep your plants warm and comfortable all right this one might shock you but you can get a heater okay ah you know what’s really cool heaters by the way can be really dangerous they’re a very easy source of a fire I will shout out to our friends over at AC Infinity they made a grow heater a heater that you can put in your grow in your grow specifically for that okay and I would recommend going with something purpose built like that or even getting something they most of them have tip over you know the if it tips over it’ll turn off but just understand a heaters take a lot of energy to run so it’s going to bump up your power bill and B there’s a lot of fires to start with heaters so just be careful with them and I’m thinking about the lights themselves aren’t they putting off a lot of heat too absolutely absolutely a BTU is about three and a half uh BTUs per watt and we know BTUs is how they measure air conditioners and heaters yeah y okay so I’m getting heat from my lights that’s a good source of heat yep uh what about underneath the plants should we be heating the ground too you know what for we were talking about this earlier and for clones yes I use a heating mat I’m honestly for the ground I don’t want to use a he heating mat would cost a lot for me to heat each plant I keep them off the ground the big heat sink or the big Heat suck is the concrete floor if you’ve got a concrete floor and uh you’re putting your plants directly on it that is like a refrigerator just chilling those roots and those roots are dictating how fast the plant grows so you’re slowing them down you’re putting them in the fridge so having like something to separate them from the ground Maybe like a pallet or a shelving unit or something like that yeah people use H pallets if you’ve got something really big a 20 or a 40 or a 60 gallon container I go buy at Home Depot you can buy half inch sheet of that foam board stuff ah okay yep I cut it in little one foot squares uh and just put my plants on that all we’re looking for is a little separator between the bottom of the bucket and the cold concrete floor and as we’re talking about insulation cuz that’s what we’re doing we’re insulating it from the floor that is the biggest bang for the buck that you can get when you’re trying to keep your grow room warm don’t forget it has some heat it’s radiating out the resistance the r factor stands for resistance and that means how much it can resist the cold so if you’ve got a big air barrier in there and you’ve got some heat on one side of it you should be able to keep that heat in or with enough insulation to insulation you should be able to keep that heat in and sometimes it’s as easy as just uh stapling it on you know it’s just taking a staple gun that r13 is don’t forget the higher the number the more insulation you get I think that foam board is like an R2 or an R3 uh you can go up to an R30 so the more insulation you can get and that’s in the Summer with the air conditioning and the winter with the heat both of those are expensive I’m going to give another shout out to AC Infinity because their tents are not a eyesore so you can have your 2×4 in your living room and you’ll have the benefit of having room temperature that normal insulation in your living room and you’ll have something that doesn’t look disgusting in the side in the corner of your room agreed like a bedroom extra bedroom something like that okay you mentioned air conditioners yeah and how they can malfunction now my first thought as not the best grower in the world is it’s winter why do I need air conditioner yeah if you run a sealed room then you’re not exhausting or exchanging any air out so it doesn’t matter how cold it is outside uh inside it still you know needs air conditioning don’t forget I’ve got what 78 350 watt lights uhuh that is a lot of it’s three and A2 BTUs per watt that’s a lot of heat that it’s putting off and it’s not exhausting out it is being recirculated I have to cond that air okay so even in the winter you’re running air conditioner in your grow and the first thing that comes to mind is part of that air conditioner is probably going to be outside might freeze up might make the air conditioner malfunction absolutely an air conditioner that’s why it has all those coils it is running air and there is a tiny bit of heat even in you know air that’s 20 25° there’s enough heat running over the coils or there’s enough air running over the coils rather to remove that heat and let’s get into what happens what causes the air conditioner to malfunction right how do you stay on top of that you know what I without getting into air conditioning Theory it freezes up it’ll freeze up it just can’t work it can’t it can’t do what it’s supposed to do which is remove the heat from the room so it will freeze and it just won’t work at that point it’s a it’s a block of ice so all right I’ll be completely honest my air conditioner fro up during this cold spell I went in and it was like a steam room in there okay I saw it there was steam coming out of your Grove air conditioner froze up the dehumidifier didn’t malfunction because that entire it’s entirely inside the room but it froze the drain line froze up so it filled with water and that turned off oh gosh okay so how do you stay on top of that you think of it beforehand okay and you think of a backup plan okay it wouldn’t have been all that difficult for me to have a t in the dehumidifier so if it uh froze up that it would just go out in an emergency Port you know somewhere that’s uh not going to the outside that would have been smart isn’t there like emergency shut off units or something like that I saw I saw something on the Internet about that yeah yeah definitely as far as it’s a high temperature cut off and it’s just an outlet and then it has a little dial you turn the dial to 80° somewhere around there if it gets past 80° it will shut off whatever is plugged in there so if that’s a light it will shut off that light if it’s a light timer it will send a signal hopefully to to shut off all the lights you have into that timer so yeah there is one way of doing it and if I have that situation and the lights go off Midway through the light cycle does that cause problems I mean it’s not good for things but it’s probably better than turning your grow at week six with nice big buds into a steam room okay let you know how that works out in the next two to three weeks sir you know what else would be smart is we talk about our friends at AC Infiniti they make this controller board a 67 was the old one I think they have a 69 controller and it has a it’ll actually instead of the cutting it off the high temperature cut off it will turn something on when it it will trigger a motor to turn on or something to turn on uh when the temperature gets either too high or too low humidity too high or too low I would set mine so when the temperature gets to 83 something like that maybe I know that my air conditioner is malfunctioned that will flip on a fan and then that fan will just exhaust the hot air of course you know nature fills a vacuum so through all the cracks there’s more cold air going to come in from outside and from the garage and that will get me out of a jam it doesn’t work with CO2 though gotcha because it’ll start exhausting out the CO2 sure definitely and it is p pulling a bunch of you know think about it if you were doing that uh just as your system you are pulling a lot of air and microbes and things from the outside under the cracks of your door and into your grow I love a sterile grow environment oh not sterile there’s microbes man I like a uh controlled grow environment gotcha okay so the main takeaway that I’m getting from this is have a backup yeah there’s there’s things that can go wrong but with a couple preemptive measures you can make sure that even if you’re out of town you’re at work you’re gr you’re grocery shopping y something goes wrong you can still have everything automated to where it fixes itself almost yes not fixes itself but gets you out of a jam I’ll say that won’t ruin your grow so here’s the main point winter growing doesn’t have to be stressful these tips will help keep your plants healthy warm and thriving even during the coldest winter months but what about about you what is your best winter growing tip leave it in the comments and if you like this video please hit that like button smash that subscribe button share
