What is a hash hole?
No matter what’s on the label, the defining feature of a hash hole is the long strip of concentrate that fills the core of the pre-roll or joint. This thin center of concentrate is usually made from a hand-rolled, snake-shaped piece of hash rosin or hash. Hash and hash rosin are preferred for their flavor and effects, and soft, malleable consistency, which makes handling and rolling easy.
As the joint burns, the concentrate melts and seeps into the surrounding flower, producing instant infusion as you smoke. The pre-roll ends up looking like a donut — an ashy circle and a burnt hole disappearing into the middle.

What is the origin of hash holes?
Legend has it that hash hole joints were named and popularized by Shant Damirdjian — a.k.a. Fidel Hydro — a grower, breeder, and California-based cannabis brand. As Fidel tells it, the inspiration for this novel genre of infused pre-rolls originated during a trip to Barcelona for Spannabis in 2018.
During the event, he spent many sessions with the who’s who of the cannabis industry. He discovered they were rolling massive joints with hash rosin rolled neatly inside. The experience left such a lasting impression on him that by 2021, Damirdjian had released the first batch of Fidel’s Hash Holes to California dispensaries. And thus, the hash hole phenomenon took off.
How do you smoke a hash hole donut?
For anyone familiar with smoking a joint, you’ll be happy to hear the same strategy applies to a hash hole. Simply set the filter end against your lips, light the other end, and then slowly take a big inhale followed by a long, gradual exhale.
Repeat. Enjoy.
But if this is your first time sessioning an infused pre-roll (or concentrates in general), you’ll want to keep the increased potency in mind. With a hash rosin core, the effects from even a few inhales will be significantly stronger than what you are used to.
Take the age-old adage to heart: start low and go slow. Start with one or two puffs, then wait for the effects to come on before you take another draw.
How to roll your own hash holes
Most people get their hash donuts at their favorite local dispensary, but if you have the time (and a bit of patience), you can also learn to roll a hash hole at home.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 Double-wide or king-sized rolling paper
- 1 King-size filter
- 1 to 2 grams of flower
- 0.5 to 1 gram of rosin or hash (think soft and malleable, not saucy or wet)
With the materials gathered, here’s how to roll a hash hole:
- Place the rolling paper on a flat surface
- Spread a thin layer of ground flower across the paper, leaving an empty border around the entire paper, including one side with a space to fit the filter
- Use a metal tool to remove the concentrate from its container and place the concentrate in the palm of your hand
- Using your other hand, carefully roll it into a snake that’s about ⅔ the length of the flower rectangle you created
- Place the snake into the center of the flower, leaving space at either end
- Pick up the paper, creating a taco-like shape with the rosin snake straight down the center of the joint
- Add the filter tip to the end.
- Using the normal tuck-and-roll method for a traditional blunt, gently roll the paper back and forth before tucking the bottom edge in and sealing
- Softly pack the ends and light up!
Pro tip: If your concentrate leans on the wet and sticky side, you can wear latex gloves or cool it down in the fridge for 30 minutes beforehand.
