During this process, most of the plant’s original compounds are removed:

- Minor cannabinoids
- Waxes and lipids
- Other plant compounds
What’s left is highly purified and potent. It’s also stripped of the compounds that define aroma and flavor. Any aroma or flavor in a finished distillate product is added back in after refinement, typically using cannabis-derived or botanical terpenes.

Live resin starts with fresh-frozen cannabis instead of dried and cured flower.
Freezing the plant right after harvest helps preserve delicate compounds like terpenes that would otherwise break down. From there, extraction is done at low temperatures to keep more of the plant’s original profile intact.
That includes:
- Native terpenes
- A broader range of cannabinoids
- More of the plant’s original aroma and flavor
That’s what gives live resin its strain-specific character. Instead of rebuilding the experience after extraction, it preserves what was already there.

- Flavor: Live resin reflects the original source material. Distillate gets its flavor from added terpenes, ranging from strain-accurate to obviously artificial, depending on the product.
- Potency: Distillate tests higher in THC. That doesn’t automatically make it stronger in practice. Live resin’s broader terpene profile can deliver more nuanced effects even at lower THC percentages.
