A 2018 PLOS ONE study found that differences in aroma profiles were linked to consumers’ smell-based perceptions of potency, expected price, and interest in smoking the samples. The researchers also noted that aroma and flavor are established attributes of cannabis quality. The takeaway for cultivators is straightforward: the sensory character of flower can influence how consumers perceive its quality and value. For growers focused on standout flower, aroma and flavor are not finishing details. They are part of what makes a crop distinctive, memorable, and harder to commoditize.

Four Variables That Shape Cannabis Flavor

Understanding how to improve cannabis flavor starts with four variables.

Genetics set the ceiling. A cultivar cannot express aroma or flavor chemistry that its genetics do not encode. No feed program can override that limit. Strong genetics are the starting point, but terpene-rich expression still depends on the rest of the cultivation system.

Environment determines how much of that ceiling is reached. Light, temperature, humidity, VPD, root-zone conditions, irrigation strategy, and harvest timing all influence performance. Inconsistent control can suppress expression and leave genetic potential unrealized.

Post-harvest can destroy what the plant built. Drying, curing, storage, and handling keep shaping cannabis flower quality after harvest.
